Open Enrollment
Enrollment Procedures

  1. Please review this brochure carefully and completely. Be sure that you fully understand all the policies and procedures outlined and are familiar with the program deadlines listed at the end of this publication. Determine your eligibility using the guidelines stated above.
  2. Review the UCSB quarterly Schedule of Classes (www.registrar.ucsb.edu/soc.htm) and the UCSB General Catalog (www.catalog.ucsb.edu) or purchase both at the UCSB Campus Bookstore. The schedule lists all courses offered each quarter and their respective dates, times, locations, and faculty. Course descriptions, prerequisites, and degree program requirements are contained in the General Catalog.
  3. Prior to attending the first class session, obtain a UCSB Extension Open Enrollment Authorization Form for each course you plan to take. Complete the form and sign where indicated. Make sure the information is legible, accurate, and complete including the correct enrollment code for the course section. A separate authorization form is required for each course. Forms are available at the end of this publication, at the UCSB Extension Student Services office, and on the Web at www.extension.ucsb.edu/student/forms.
  4. Students who wish to enroll in Computer Engineering and Computer Science courses must have their courses approved by the Open Enrollment manager (located at the UCSB Extension office) at least two weeks prior to the class start date. Please call (805) 893-4162 to make an appointment. Photocopies of transcripts are required for the meeting.
  5. Attend class. Introduce yourself to the professor and indicate that you wish to enroll in the course through the Open Enrollment Program; ask the professor to sign the Authorization Form. (Enrollment in a course is at the faculty member’s discretion). If attendance at a discussion section is required, you must also have the teaching assistant sign the form. Only UCSB faculty or their designates may approve and sign the Authorization Forms; teaching assistants may sign only in conjunction with a professor when the course requires a discussion section.

Note: A) The professor may defer signing the Open Enrollment Authorization Form until all regularly matriculated students have been accommodated. If you find that you cannot enroll in your first choice because the class is full, you may obtain additional authorization forms and try other courses. B) The department signature in addition to the instructor’s signature is required for all courses in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials, Mechanical Engineering, and for graduate courses in Economics.

  6. Return your completed Authorization Form with the required signatures and pay the necessary application and enrollment fees by the established deadline (see the Calendar). Forms may be returned the following ways:
    • In person: UCSB Extension Student Services
      (see the calendar for location)
    • By mail:
      UCSB Extension Student Services
      Mail Code 1110
      University of California, Santa Barbara
      Santa Barbara, CA 93106-1110
You must obtain all required approvals and pay all fees by the deadlines listed at the end of this publication in order to complete the Open Enrollment registration process. Exceptions to the published deadline to add and/or drop courses require a petition and payment of fee. Approval of late add petitions are granted only in very unusual and compelling circumstances (see Dropping Courses/Withdrawal Procedures and Late Add Procedure)
  7. Once you submit your authorization form and pay fees, you will receive, by mail, an enrollment verification card for each course. This card is your proof of enrollment; you will not receive a Perm Number or ID card from UCSB. Retain the UCSB Extension card for use throughout the quarter.
